What is “Call for a KIT”?

The Call for a KIT started as a small pilot in 2015, built on the ethos of “community engagement with a clinical twist”. The initiative targets non-responders to the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) in areas of low uptake across Lancashire. These individuals are invited to consultations held within primary care practices where they are seen by a Community Health Promotion Team. Various community engagement models are used to encourage participation in the BCSP.

Following a successful two-year pilot, the project received core funding from NHS England/Public Health England and Lancashire BCSP for a further two-years. Due to its strong outcomes, Call for a KIT is now block contracted and has become a mainstream service within Lancashire.

The initiative involves holding dedicated clinics within GP practices. Patients who have not completed the BCSP test kit, referred to as non-responder’s patients (NRPs) are invited by their GP practice to meet members of the BCSP Health Promotion Team. During the 15-minute clinic appointment, the kit is demonstrated, multi-lingual leaflets are provided, and a video is shown explaining how to complete the kit.

Who delivers it?

Community CVS is commissioned by NHS North West & NHS Lancashire BCSP to promote and improve bowel screening uptake, with a focus on reducing inequalities by targeting groups with historically low participation. Community CVS established the Lancashire BCSP Health Promotion Team, employing BCSP Health Promotion Officers to deliver the project. The team also includes a BCSP Health Promotion Specialist, employed through NHS Lancashire BCSP.

How can we host a Call for a KIT clinic at out practice?

In 2025/26, Call for a Kit clinics will be held at GP practices in Lancashire and South Cumbria with bowel screening uptake rates below 65%. If your practice falls below this threshold and we haven’t yet contacted you, please reach out to us. Clinic availability may be limited by staffing and other resources.

We want to implement Call for a KIT in our region, what should we do?

We are currently developing an evidence-based implementation manual for Call for a Kit, funded by North West Cancer Research and developed in collaboration with the University of Lancashire. If you are interested in adopting the programme, please contact us at bfwh.lancscfak@nhs.net.

How can we collaborate?

We welcome collaboration opportunities to help raise awareness of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. We offer training and work closely with researchers at the University of Lancashire and University College London to ensure our processes are evaluated and that health inequalities are not exacerbated. Collaboration requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on alignment with the screening programme’s priorities.
