Gillian’s story

Gillian attended our Drop-In service with her support worker from Creative Support. Gillian who suffers from Mental Health issues, schizophrenia was looking to engage into volunteering and wanted to start straight away.

Knowing that she wanted to start straight away we helped her to find opportunities that would not require a DBS check as this means volunteers don’t have to wait too long before starting. We looked into Charity shops (Barnardos) & conservation outdoor activities.

We asked Hannah her support worker to accompany her on her visit to Barnados. After visiting Barnardos we then helped Gillian to consider her support needs as a volunteer around BArnardoes policies & procedures.

We arranged  arranged a taster period for Gillian. Gillian so enjoyed the work that she then made a huge commitment to volunteer with Barnardos on Monday, Wednesday & Fridays completing 12 hours per week, 4 hours a day.

Gillian said that this has made a vast improvement on her health keeping her focus & occupied.

A short message from her support worker:

Hi Yasmin

I’m just getting in touch to give you an update on Gillian.

(I was the support worker who accompanied her to her appointment). After she did her first trial shift of voluntary work she said that she really enjoyed it. Gillian has since arranged with the staff there to work regular shifts on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday Thank you so very much for helping Gillian to get this position.

Cheers,

Hannah,  (Creative Support)
