Community Wealth Fund Campaign Launch

Today, at the CVS Funding Fayre, which is taking place within Small Charity Week (find out more), Garth Hodgkinson, Chief Executive launched a local campaign to encourage more people and organisations to support the national movement and join the Community Wealth Fund Alliance.

The national movement is calling on the Government and the main political parties to support the creation of a Community Wealth Fund – which would use dormant assets held by insurance companies – to create a permanent fund that would invest to improve the circumstances within our poorest communities.  It would offer a fairer deal for communities that are currently being ignored.  There are billions of pounds in unclaimed insurance funds, pensions funds, bonds and stocks and shares just sitting there not being used.   We are calling on the Government and all the main political parties to introduce legislation to release these funds for use by our poorest communities.

Garth Hodgkinson stated:

“Across the country our communities are experiencing growing inequalities. Small charities and community groups are making a massive difference to everyone’s lives, and especially people living in our poorest communities.  These charities and community groups are a lifeblood for many residents and more and more people are being supported by them. However, many of the groups and many of our deprived neighbourhoods are facing significant financial challenges.  The creation of a national Community Wealth Fund would help enormously.”

Council Leader, Councillor Mohammed Khan, who opened the funding fayre, added:

“It’s very important for the Council to engage locally with charities and as Leader of the Borough Council, I take a personal interest to ensure we get the best opportunities to attract funding into the Borough and ensuring our charities are supported.

Volunteers, voluntary groups, community organisations and charities do so much good work and, as a Council, we do recognise that you all need funding and resources to continue this great work.”

Councillor Khan pledged Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s support for the campaign.
